How to Get Ebook Updates at No Charge

My Philosophy about Ebook Updates

When I update a SpryFeet.com ebook, I want you to get the update at no charge.

Before ebooks, publishers had to send out those little “errata” sheets for physical books. The promise of ebooks from the beginning was that publishers could update ebooks easily.

I embrace this promise of ebook updates. My philosophy is that I want early buyers — often my biggest fans! — to enjoy corrections and updates, too.

Bonus: If you buy one of my books as a new paperback from Amazon, you can “buy” the matching Kindle ebook for $0.00. (Learn more here.) So, even if you have the paperback edition, you can get the updated content — as a Kindle ebook!

What You Must Do

Updating your SpryFeet.com ebook requires two things.

  1. You must KNOW about the update.
  2. You must GET the update.

Step A: You must KNOW about the update.

How will you know for certain that I have updated the content of an ebook?

  1. Join the SpryFeet.com Readers Club here.
  2. Confirm your membership/subscription.
  3. Click the “Update your profile.” link at the bottom of one of the subsequent messages.
  4. Check the checkbox for that ebook in the “SpryFeet.com Books Read” section of your profile.
  5. Click the [Update Profile] button.

I will then notify you when I have updated the content!

Step B: You must GET the update.

Getting the update depends on the format of the ebook that you bought earlier — from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Google, or Kobo. I asked each company how a customer gets an ebook update. Here are their answers:

  • Google Play:

New buyers will automatically receive the latest version, and the customers who already purchased your book will be able to update the version they have, they won’t have to purchase the book again. I would like to share with you that if you update your book file, users (who have purchased your book on Play) will be able to see the updated file automatically. Some of them may just have to refresh their browser. However, if a user has downloaded the file in their systems, those files will not get updated [, but a user can remove and re-download the file to get the update].

  • Kindle: [See “Tip” at bottom of page for my own, alternative approach.]

It is not required to re-buy the book (with the same ASIN) in order to get the updated version.

In order to get the updated version of that ebook, you can contact our customer service through the following numbers. Our customer service will send it to you free of cost.

    – U.S. and Canada: 1-866-216-1072
    – International: 1-206-266-2992

    They’re available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

  • Kobo:

Currently, when updates are made to already published books, unfortunately readers who had already purchased this book will not automatically receive the new version. However, they can contact help@kobo.com and have the older version replaced by the new version at no cost.

  • Nook:

If you upload a new .epub manuscript file to replace the one currently On Sale as a NOOK Book, or if you update text in the Manuscript Editor and publish a new version of your NOOK Book, a customer who has already purchased and downloaded your NOOK Book will not have your NOOK Book replaced on their devices. If a customer archives and re-downloads your NOOK Book, however, that customer will receive the updated file at no additional charge. NOOK does not reach out to notify customers of changes to any NOOK Book, and NOOK does not share customer information with anyone.

Tip: If you have an older edition of a Kindle ebook, then delete and re-download the ebook to get the latest edition. A SpryFeet.com Readers Club member confirmed that this works when I released edition 2 of Weight Loss in 10,000 Steps a Day. He had Kindle edition 1; deleting it and re-downloading it from his cloud library got him Kindle edition 2.

That’s it!
