Call for distance runners around Rockford, Illinois

Jon Gallas, a doctoral student in physical therapy and a long-time runner, is involved in a research study related to lumbar instability and distance runners.

The study is being performed in Rockford, Illinois.

So, if you live in the area or know someone who lives in the area and would like to participate in the study, then please keep reading.

The goals are:

  1. To see whether there is a relationship between clinical signs of lumbar instability and distance running.
  2. Determine whether there are specific training variables that are related to clinical signs of lumbar instability in distance runners.

Here are the particulars:

  • Subjects will be tested for lumbar spine range of motion, hip strength, abdominal strength, low-back muscle strength, and mobility of each spinal segment.
  • Testing time is 20 minutes for one session only.
  • Refreshments will be provided for all subjects.
  • Study population:
    • 30 runners with low-back pain;
    • 30 runners without low-back pain;
    • 30 control subjects without low-back pain.
  • Subjects must be between the ages of 18 and 55.
  • Subjects must have no history of spinal surgery, tumor, or spinal stenosis.
  • Subjects currently must not be pregnant or receiving physical-therapy services for back pain.

If you know someone who may want to participate, then please forward this blog post’s URL to him or her.

I could have posted Jon’s telephone number and personal email address here, but I want to protect him from telemarketing and spam robots. So, if you believe that you meet the qualifications and you want to participate, then please enter the following in my contact form:

  • Name: Your full name, please
  • Email: An email address that you monitor for incoming messages
  • Subject: Lumbar instability

Please do NOT go into details about your medical condition in your contact-form message.

  1. It is none of my business.
  2. You should do this only in person when you participate in any study.

As I receive the contact-form submissions, I will forward them to Mr. Gallas so that he can contact you by email or telephone to make arrangements for your participation. To protect your privacy, I will delete your submission and the message that I forward to Mr. Gallas.

But hurry! I do not know how close he is now to getting enough subjects. Once he lets me know, I will modify this blog post accordingly.

Thanks in advance for your participation!
