Emotion Will Take You Only So Far

Posted on March 5, 2013 by Kirk Mahoney

“Emotion Will Take You Only So Far, and Other Lessons Learned from The Woodlands Half Marathon” was going to be the title of this article, but I went for brevity over completeness! My wife and I last year registered for The Woodlands Marathon and Half Marathon, respectively. Because my wife is an endurance walker and …

What a Myth Teaches Us about Happiness

Posted on January 26, 2013 by Kirk Mahoney

What can a myth teach us about happiness as endurance runners and walkers? I just read an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal about the myth of a stagnant middle class in America. The authors wrote, “The average hourly wage in real dollars has remained largely unchanged from at least 1964…” But, they went …

Have to, or Get to?

Posted on December 24, 2012 by Kirk Mahoney

Have to, or get to? That one-word change can make a world of difference to your happiness. Are you saying “I have to…” a lot? If you are an endurance runner or walker, this can spell doom for your training and racing. Here is what I mean…

Posted on December 7, 2012 by Kirk Mahoney

A 5-hour marathon, in 3.144″ or 10% higher cadence? What does that mean? Let me explain. I ran:walked the La Porte By the Bay Half Marathon last Sunday — on a relatively warm morning with clear skies and the spectacular Fred Hartman Bridge, which rises almost 180 feet above the water. When I checked my …

Seven Marathon Lessons Learned from Two 10K Races

Posted on October 22, 2012 by Kirk Mahoney

Here are seven lessons that I learned as a marathoner from two 10K races — one completed last Saturday, and one completed last month. When I finished my previous 10K (Conoco Phillips Rodeo Run) about 2.5 years ago, I realized to my disappointment that there was no finisher medal waiting for me. I had been …

Often-Unspoken Questions about Gratitude

Posted on April 21, 2012 by Kirk Mahoney

Many of us have often-unspoken questions about gratitude that we don’t ask because of fear of appearing ungrateful. Although others who write about gratitude rarely address these questions, I believe as the author of Gratitude Power for Runners and Walkers that you deserve answers to them. So, here are my answers to five popular but …

Surfside Beach Marathon 2012

Posted on February 19, 2012 by Kirk Mahoney

Surfside Beach Marathon 2012 yesterday is supposedly the only marathon that is run entirely on the beach. The marathon course in Surfside Beach, Texas, is a flattened loop stretching 13.1 miles from turnaround to turnaround, with the start/finish line about 2.5 miles from one of the turnarounds. The weather yesterday morning made it feel as …

2012 Texas Marathon vs. Houston Marathon

Posted on January 22, 2012 by Kirk Mahoney

The 2012 Texas Marathon and Houston Marathon were just two weeks apart — on January 1st and January 15th, respectively. I got to participate in both of them, and finishing yet another two marathons that close together was educational. What made those fifteen days even more fun was getting to see IN PERSON (Woo-hoo!) the …
