How to Read a Kindle Ebook without a Kindle

A powerful feature of Kindle ebooks is that you can read them without a Kindle device. All you need is a Kindle app — FREE from Amazon!

This tutorial assumes that you have not yet associated a Kindle app with your Amazon account, and it gives an example set of steps of how to do get the Kindle for PC app and then the ebook to read it on that app.

If you already have associated a Kindle app with your Amazon account, then you may skip steps 3-8 below.

1. Open your browser, and sign in to your Amazon account.
2. Navigate to the Kindle ebook that you want to buy — in this example, Weight Loss in 10,000 Steps a Day.
3. Click [Buy now with 1-Click®].
   
4. When you see this next page, click the “Get Kindle for PC” link.
   
5. Click [Download now] on the next page.
   
6. Follow the instructions on the next page to download and install the Kindle app.
   
7. When the app displays the “Register Kindle” dialog, enter your Amazon credentials and click [Register].
   
8. Return to the browser page for the ebook that you want to buy.
9. Click [Buy now with 1-Click®].
   
10. When this confirmation message appears, click the “Read now in Kindle for PC” link to read the ebook in that app.
    

There are similar steps for getting a Kindle ebook to read on one of the other Kindle apps.
